Employees spend about eight hours at work every day. (some may laugh at that and realize it’s much more.) Either way, I’d bet it’s more than the time we spend sleeping and BOTH greatly impact our mood and overall quality of life.
I keep on top of employee engagement surveys and strategies as it’s a major component of my keynote speech. One study reveals that satisfied people are 12 percent more productive than their less happy peers. While money is only one part of the equation, most employees feel motivated by feelings of ownership as well as a sense of recognition for their work.
So, what do you do? (Really, I’d love to hear about your employee engagement strategies). How have you dealt with the unproductive employees? Here were some thoughts from a recent study to boost productivity and employee engagement. I didn’t think any were earth shattering new concepts, but certainly doesn’t hurt to help impact their attitude without being a tyrant by reinforcing what they found:
Embrace Change
Monotonous and redundant systems may be holding your employees back. Organizations need to be open to change. Depending upon the pace of developments in your specific industry, you need to make consistent changes in your processes and practices to enhance employee productivity. Establish and follow a periodic audit system to regularly review the processes and system to eliminate the ones making employees unproductive. Eliminating practices that do not contribute to the organization’s success can make the tasks easier and more efficient, thus creating an impact on the overall productivity of employees.
Create an Interesting Work Environment
If you give your employees a reason to show up at work, they are more likely to be productive. Employees with better perception about their work life or work-life balance, feel happy at the workplace which directly affects their performance. Job rotation and offering diverse roles and responsibilities can be some good strategies to prevent employees from boredom while at the same time improve their output and performance.
Besides this, some businesses can also benefit by offering their employees flexible hours to boost their productivity. This may give them better control over their own schedule, thus allowing them to work during the hours they feel most energetic and inspired.
Motivate and Recognize their Contributions
You can greatly affect employee engagement and productivity by simply motivating them and recognizing their efforts. With appreciation and reward, employees can feel valued which may boost their morale to make greater contribution, thus improving the output. In order for this, develop a robust performance management system to ensure that employees are fairly appreciated. Also, you can organize employee motivational seminars, trainings and workshops to reinvigorate them and bring out the best in them.
