This is NOT political commentary. BUT, whether you are a Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal, or just don’t care about politics – you have to admit that Donald Trump has people talking.

But The Donald as a motivational speaker?!   Seriously!?

Now I didn’t say he IS one, but he sure has traits of a great motivational speaker.

So, here are five reasons why…

…Donald Trump would make a good motivational speaker

It’s SHOWTIME!

Many parts of Trump’s campaign involve keeping the audience asking for more. Even Steve Grubbs, Director for Rand Paul‘s Iowa campaign said “The entertainment value of a Trump event is high.” When he speaks, it’s a show, an experience and event! An audience craves to be engaged and entertained, and many audiences can’t seem to get enough of Trump. I’ve said it over and over; “No One Remembers Boring and Nobody wants to buy average!”

What are your keynote speakers doing to invoke this curiosity and engagement into their message and with your audience? Do your Keynote speakers have any entertaining aspects to their presentation style or that resonate with your brand?

If you want a memorable keynote or motivational speaker, then get an entertaining one to keep your audience hooked and asking for more.

No TelePrompter

“When you run for president you shouldn’t be allowed to use a TelePrompter,” stated Trump.

This is important because it allows great speakers to present his or her message from the heart and with the conviction needed to win their audience over. Not to mention you should know your material anyway. Sure, they can have notes. But, having no script allows the speaker to better visually engage and connect with their audience. It also enables them to read the audience in order to adapt the content, energy or movement based on the body language of those watching. Every message isn’t right for every audience. If they’re bound to a scripted teleprompter, they may be disengaging your audience and not even know it.

Takes Risks

A couple of weeks ago, Donald kicked out of his news conference a journalist who asked about his immigration policies. The reporter later returned and Trump and he engaged in a lengthy back and forth over Trump’s plan on immigration reform.

This is only one ‘risky’ incident. I’m sure there are some others that pop into your head as well. Or, you may be like many who are simply anticipating what might blow up next.

Even though these actions might have stopped someone else, they just add to the curiosity factor of “What will Donald say or do next?”

Similarly, most motivational speakers take risks, and I aim to bet that most of us wouldn’t be on the stage otherwise. They took risks in order to have the story and inspiration to share. They challenge an audiences to take risks of stretching beyond comfort zones and imagine “What would I have done in that situation?” Would you have kicked out a reporter?  Would you have let them back in and took their question?

We, as motivational speakers, take risks every time we step in front of an audience. We risk that someone may not like what we have to say. Well, if you’re trying to make everyone happy, you are probably doing something wrong. Example: Donald Trump.

Impromptu Presentation Style

“As far as preparing for the debates, I am who I am. I’ve never debated before. I’m not a debater, I get things done,” said Trump when asked about the Cleveland debates last month.

Can’t you tell when a politician goes directly into their canned message? They took the question and used a transition, or pivot point, to direct the answer a different way. Similarly, can’t you tell when a professional or motivational speaker is reciting a speech like they’ve done it a thousand times?

Mr. Trump may certainly know talking points ahead of time, but he certainly appears impromptu or “off-the-cuff”. We as listeners, relate and connect with that so much better and effectively.

Use of Social Media

“I have millions of followers between Twitter and Facebook. (Actually, 4.5 million between the two; heavily on the Twitter side.) It’s incredible,” stated Trump. He is very active on both sites posting at least once a day and his content receives a fair amount of shares and likes.

And to show he is current with Gen Y and Z, he used the power of Instagram last week to attack Jeb Bush on his immigration policies when he was Governor of Florida.

Embrace and engage with social channels before, during and after the presentation. Sometimes motivational speakers will even use real-time social feeds from the audience to make their presentation even better.

Jon Petz for President

Not really! However, Jon Petz is a funny motivational speaker who is available for corporate and association keynote addresses!
